Charity rallies: 2008 launch
2008 sees the launch of “Charity rallies” a new concept combining motor sport, adventure travel and charity fundraising. Unlike other car rallies, the aim is not to finish first but to raise lots of money for good causes and/or donate a vehicle to charity in the destination country. The inaugural charity rallies event is destined for Mongolia. On 5th July 2008 teams will depart to the sights and sounds of a traditional Mongolian Nadaam festival being staged on Highbury fields, Islington. From London they will travel, unsupported, to the Mongolian capital of Ulan Bataar. Teams devise their own routes; newbies may prefer to take the easy tarmac road route through Russia, whereas, those looking for a bit more adventure can boldly head south through Turkey, Iran, Kazakhstan and any of the other ‘stan’s before heading into Mongolia through the western route for some serious off-road fun in one of the least populated regions on earth. Whichever route they take, the one thing teams won’t be able to miss is the famous Mongolian hospitality; before they know it they’ll be sitting in a Ger sipping Yak butter tea with the locals. The entrance fee is surprisingly low, less than half that of other cross-continental rallies. This is due, in part, to “Go Help” the charitable foundation set up to ensure that funds raised for charity events are handled correctly and actually go to the charity. Go Help and Charity Rallies are staffed entirely by unpaid rally veterans, volunteering their time, with very little provision for administration costs. This non-profit making status ensures lower costs to the participants and the maximum amount of money reaching the benefiting charities. Future Charity Rallies are bound for Egypt, Georgia, Pakistan, South Africa and even Australia! If none of those appeal then you can organise your own. As long as it’s for charity and non-profit making then the Charity Rallies organisation can help bring your ideas to fruition.
