Note from Mattsplat: I have it on good authority from David at Stantours that it IS posible to enter Iran on an alternative transit visa buyable at the border. This does away with the need for a carnet. David says that Stantours can and will, if requested, offer border assistance. I am waiting to find out the cost of the assistance. -

LOI?
Do we still need an LOI for this application? I have applied for one via stantours, but might as well go to the embassy and pop in the application if not as everything I now read suggests its not necessary!? Do they take your passports off you during the process?
Also, Is there any update on this Carnet issue?
Cheers
You need an authorisation
You need an authorisation number from Tehran, not strictly an LOI, but similar, it takes about 2 weeks to be granted. As for the alternative to a carnet, apparently there is an alternative, but details are sketchy at best and with the Turkmen deadline waiting at the other end, I chose the carnet route.
Light travels faster than sound.
You seemed bright until you spoke.
Change of passport
I have an authorisation number but have since changed passports. Should i re-apply for a new one or can I submit both new and old passport?
Any advice much appriciated.

What a fantastically helpfull woman, you can get a tourist visa.
She said if you can get a transit visa, get it and run, but the Embassy in London will issue tourist visa's only. I will be getting a 7 day transit (issued in Brussels) which is extendable inside Iran.
She is also prepared to give discount because we are on the charity rally.
Get in there people, mention the Mongolian Charity Rally and she will know whats going on.
