Tajikistan
Note: Refer to the 'general guidelines' before consulting this page.
Information:
- Most nationalities require a visa for Tajikistan.
- Tajik visa rules change with the wind (and the political climate). Sometimes you may not need a LOI and sometimes you do - check with your nearest embassy to be sure, and if in doubt get one.
- If you do need an LOI, and are on the Roof of the World Rally or are visiting SWORDE-Teppa, we can provide one free of charge.
- A new embassy is open in London, although with high fees (currently £50 for a one week visa).
- If you plan to visit the Pamir mountains, travel the Pamir Highway or generally travel anywhere in the east of the country then you will require a GBAO (Gorno-Badakhshan Autonomous Oblast) permit. This is a large stamp in your passport and is obtained from embassies at the same time as your visa. In London this costs £50.
- Applications can be submitted on Monday between 10:00am and 12:00pm, and collected on the same times on Thursday. Postal applications take a week.
- Requirements: Passport, Photocopy of Passport, Passport Photo, Application Form, LOI (sometimes...)
Filling in the Form:
The visa application form is pretty basic, and seems to vary from embassy to embassy. When applying for a GBAO permit ensure that you request to visit/highlight ALL REGIONS to avoid any problems if/when taking the wrong road!

Received my visa after only one day processing at the Tajiki embassy in Washington, DC. There is a nice stamp on the page next to the visa which I am hoping is the GBAO permit.
There is no separate GBAO form or place on the visa application to indicate GBAO Permit requests. After speaking with the Embassy officials I wrote under "Number of Entries" on the regular visa application "One Month Single-Entry Tourist Visa AND GBAO Permit". With my applicaiton I included the following cover letter:
Dear Consular Section:
I am requesting for the issuance of the following to the Republic of Tajikistan:
The purpose of this trip is tourism. I will be driving from Kyrgyzstan, along the Pamir Highway in the GBAO, to Dushanbe and Kurgan-Tube.
My contact in The Republic of Tajikistan will be SWORDE-Teppa, English & Education Centre, 25b Vahdat Street, Kugan-Tube, Khalton Oblast, Tajikistan (00 992 3222 3-62-33).
My dates of travel will be 9 July 2009 to 9 August 2009.
I will be traveling by car, entering The Republic of Tajikistan at the Kyrgyzstan border.
I will be staying at the Hyatt Regency Dushanbe, Prospekt Ismoili Somoni 26/1, Dushanbe, Tajikistan 734026 (00 992 43 377 1234).
My time is limited as I am departing on the journey 1 July 2009, so your prompt attention to this is appreciated. Thank you in advance. Please contact me if there are any questions. I look forward to visiting your fine country.
Sincerely,
Seems to have worked for me. Hope this helps!
Hi!
Does anyone know if Russian citizens are required to have a special permit to visit GBAO? It's quite confusing since Russia-Tajikistan is visafree and there seems to be a lack of official info on the matter...
Thanks!
